Rajasthan’s young player, Riyan Parag, played a mature innings of 54 runs against Mumbai at Wankhede Stadium on Monday, April 1st. Parag scored his second consecutive half-century in the Indian Premier League and climbed to the top of the run-scorers’ list, snatching the orange cap from Virat Kohli.

2024 season

Parag elaborated on the changes he made to his game before the 2024 season and said that he simplified things to keep consistency, which is now paying off. In the IPL 2023 season, Parag scored a total of 78 runs in 7 matches and faced considerable trolling on social media for his antics. In the 2024 season, he took on the role of Rajasthan’s new number 4 and scored 181 in 3 innings so far.

Speaking to the broadcaster, Parag said that playing in the domestic circuit helped him, where he found immense success in the 2024 season so far. Parag’s remarkable feat marked him as the inaugural cricketer to achieve the milestone of scoring six uninterrupted half-centuries in the realm of T20 cricket.

Parag’s statement

“To be completely frank, there’s nothing particularly extraordinary about my approach to batting.” I keep it simple rather than trying too hard. Earlier, when I wasn’t scoring runs, I used to overthink and try different things. “This season, my strategy has been straightforwar, focus on the ball and execute my shots,” Riyan Parag commented post-match.

“Whenever I go to bat in the domestic circuit, it’s the same situation (losing early wickets and batting at number 4). Upon witnessing the swift dismissals of Jos bhai (Buttler) and Ash bhai (Ashwin), I realized I could replicate similar performances in domestic cricket when facing such circumstances. It was a mathematical perspective,” Parag added.

Riyan Parag in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Parag showcased outstanding form during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023, leaving a lasting impression with his stellar performances. He set a new T20 record by scoring 57 runs off 33 balls. Assam emerged victorious over Kerala in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match, thanks to an impactful performance by Parag, held at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai.
Parag admitted that he wasn’t performing up to standards in the previous season and realized that the issue was with his practice methods before the IPL season.

“I hadn’t been performing for three or four years in the IPL. And you really go back to your hotel room and think when you know you can do it, and the results aren’t coming, you go back to the drawing board. I realized I wasn’t practicing at that level, so I went and did that. I practiced those exact kind of deliveries (pace, seam, swing, and other factors that come at a high level) and scenarios a lot, and hence the performance and results,” concluded Parag.

With a half-century, Parag now has 181 runs in 3 matches at a hilarious average of 181.00.
