The BJP stalwart, who played a crucial role in bringing national prominence to the party through his Rath Yatra in the early 1990s advocating for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, was honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on Saturday.

Prime Minister Modi, speaking about the award conferred upon Advani, expressed his joy, saying, “I am delighted to share that Shri Lal Krishna Advani ji will be honored with the Bharat Ratna. I told him so in our conversation, and I thought he deserved this honor.”

Born in Karachi
Born in Karachi and later moving to India after the partition, at the age of thirteen, Lal Krishna Advani joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1941. He joined the group that was founded by the well-known Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which in 1980 became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Ram Rath Yatra
Lal Krishna Advani served four terms in the Rajya Sabha, with his first term beginning in 1970, and remained in the Upper House until 1989. In 1990, he initiated the Ram Rath Yatra from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya, advocating for the construction of the Ram Temple. The Yatra gained widespread support, and in the 1991 general elections, the BJP emerged as the second-largest party in the Parliament after the Congress.
