The border area between Kyrgyzstan and Xinjiang had an earthquake of magnitude 7.1, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) study. GFZ stated that the earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).

Details of Earthquake

The 7.01-magnitude earthquake occurred about 2:00 AM local time (1800 GMT on Monday) in the Xinjiang province of China, at a depth of 27 kilometers (17 miles). This is precisely 140 kilometers west of Aksu city. Despite being approximately 1,400 kilometers away, significant tremors were felt in New Delhi.

According to Reuters, neighboring Kazakhstan experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7, as reported by the Emergency Ministry. China’s CCTV reported information on 14 aftershocks following the initial earthquake, with two registering a magnitude of 5 or above. Nearly a few weeks ago earthquake of 7.6 magnitude shook the japan caused and took lives of more than hundred people, hope this does not happen to common people of China.

Earthquake happened in a rural area where the Uighur Muslim ethnic group live

The seismic event happened in a rural area where the Uighur Muslim ethnic group, who have been subjected to collective detentions and forced assimilation as part of official efforts, predominates. The epicenter was in Uqturpan County, where temperatures dropped to a negative 18 degrees Celsius (around 0 degrees Fahrenheit), as predicted by the China Meteorological Administration.

This week, snowy storms and low temperatures have caused numerous school and traffic closures throughout northern and central China. In Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, residents evacuated their homes despite the cold weather, some wearing pajamas and slippers.

The tremors were also felt in Uzbekistan about 30 minutes after the initial shocks.

AFP reports that the possibility of casualties has been mentioned by USGS, though immediate reports of deaths in the affected mountainous, rural areas have not been received.

According to the assessment, “There is a possibility of significant damage, and the disaster is potentially widespread.”

This seismic event happened the day after a landslide that imprisoned numerous individuals in southwest China and killed at least eight people. In addition, thousands of people in the Gansu province were forced to flee their homes when an earthquake in northern China in December claimed 148 lives.

Tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

The National Center for Seismology reports that a strong seismic event with a magnitude of 7.1 occurred on Tuesday in southern China’s Xinjiang province. The intense tremors were felt in the Delhi-NCR region.

The National Center for Seismology stated, “An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale occurred in southern Xinjiang, China, at 11:39 PM tonight.” According to them, the seismic event occurred at a depth of 80 kilometers.

This seismic event occurred one month after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Gansu, China, and nearby areas and left at least 131 people dead. Global Times reported, citing Gansu officials, that over 87,000 people have been evacuated to safe places.

Although seismic events of this size are not common, the United States Geological Survey noted that the earthquake happened in the Tian Shan mountain range and described it as a seismically active location. It noted that the largest seismic event in this area in the previous century was a 7.1 magnitude tremor in 1978, nearly 200 kilometers north of the current event.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that several aftershocks, measuring up to 4.5 in magnitude, followed the main seismic event.

The neighboring countries Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan were also affected by the earthquakes. Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan, saw inhabitants fleeing their houses, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

During seismic events, it’s crucial to stay updated on developments and adhere to safety precautions. Our thoughts are with those affected by this natural disaster, and authorities are taking action to protect the safety of the afflicted communities.
